Day 8: Football Fears

So last Trinidad and Tobago left themselves a difficult opportunity to qualify through the group stage after paying the price of trying to defend a 0-0 draw for 90 long minutes. As soon as Peter ‘you-can’t-teach-tall’ Crouch bagged his first of the finals TnT had to step up and the inevitable second goal came from a wonderful Gerrard strike.

Elsewhere, I’m disappointed to see the end of Ivory Coast’s competitive campaign. They deserved at least a draw against a Robin van Persie led Holland side. CIV have looked the most dangerous and competent of the African nations in Germany this year but found themselves in the group of death, which disappointingly won’t bring any upsets now.

Argentina made their statement of intent today with an amazing display providing a 6-0 thrashing of Serbia and Montenegro. If Sven doesn’t serve up a positive formation against Sweden on Tuesday we could find ourselves falling short of winning the group and leave ourselves more likely to meet Germany after and then a dreaded quarter final with Argentina.
