Just in from another night at work, tho I haven’t worked at the bar all that much this week… well hardly at all. Anyways, DK gives me a lift home. He’s the epathetic bar manager and fellow ultimate frisbee player. I wante to work in a normal bar because I didn’t like being in a ‘Christian-ghetto’ and well this bar is far from a Christian ghetto. We we’re driving towards Didsbury and DK asked what I volunteering for the church actually means… what do i actually do. That’s a tough one I thought… ‘what do I do?’

How do I explain all the odd stuff that I get upto being part of a movement of friends with prayer at it’s core to a non-Christian? As I stumbled over my words, the tiredness slowing me down a bit, I found out that he studies religion. Oh no, he’s educated. He most likely knows more about the religion of Christianity than I do… but then that’s my point, I don’t do religion and that’s one reason why I do what I do. For freedom. Then he started about my personal aim in it all and started comparing stuff to Buddhism. Hmmm, the freeing of oneself to find the truth for the ultimate good of all things. Well, I tried to explain that that sounds a lot like Christianity… Jesus being the Truth, the Good News and all that eternal life stuff. My big point was the fact that I saw Christianity as a relationship with God rather than something to do. It was kind of weird, me and DK talk about cocktails, bars, the manchester ultimate scene and occasionally about his drunk girlfriend (DK doesn’t drink). I smiled as I thought to myself… “I’m struggling to explain myself at this early hour but this is why I wanted a normal bar scene job, so I could be a missionary to city bar tenders, so that I would be pushed out of my comfort zone.”

I wish I was in Bristol… it is Tour 1 this weekend. For the ignorant that marks the start of the major series of summer frisbee tournaments. I’m between teams so didn’t have anyone to play with.
