24hr Licenses to Drink and Fight?

Thankfully my bar isn’t going to use its new 3am license apart from exceptional cases. Which is good news but also reveals the reality of the situation.

So when walking around down in the early hours last night looking for a fight to entertain me (yeah right) I was disappointed to find the city very quiet. Where is all the drunken madness that the news broadcasters had promised me? All I found was a group of girls having a bit of a slanging match at the bus stop; one of them was in strop because she couldn’t find a 24hr bar! I thought this was funny until, but then they got on the same bus as me.

You see, it works out that most places don’t have 24hour licenses. The large majority of changes have been to extend the license until 3 or 4am. Supermarkets account for a good chunk of the 24hour cases. And then, like with the case of our place, the extensions aren’t going to be used on a day by day basis.

The F Word

Freezing fog has crept up on us. I was quite enjoying the crisp, clear though very cold days last week; makes for a refreshing change from the persistent life sapping dull drizzle. So when the snow didn’t arrive I wasn’t going to let myself get too down hearted, there’s plenty of time for the snow to show up, instead I decided to enjoy the freezing fog. It sounds like a monster that stalks through the woods suffocating small children who wander off the path. It was quite dangerous riding your bike on the roads today but there were great effects of silhouettes against head lights trapped in the fog. Usually I wouldn’t go through the park after dark but the street was more dangerous in these conditions. So with my feet pounding on the pedals I shot through the wooded trail, trying not to think about the fore-mentioned monster, and enjoyed the thrill of only being able to see a few yards in front as I darted between trees hoping that a foolhardy group of squirrels weren’t playing chicken round the next bend.

I would quite appreciate some batteries for the lights on the bike that I’m currently borrowing: a pair of AAAs and a pair of Ds, thanks.

Harry Potter Movie

Daniel Radcliffe has become Britain’s richest teenager, according to the times, but I have ask - at what price? I saw him being interviewed recently on T4 and they had a good little chuckle about how out of touch he was with what was going on in the ‘real world’ and he did come across as lacking in social skills. That said however T4’s supposedly ‘real world’ was more of a pop quiz and anyone with a life that involves something more than sitting glued to MTV would have struggled to do well. Or maybe I should conclude that I’m just out of touch with popular culture but just not as rich!

I’m hoping to go see the film later this week but I’ll have to magic up some money for my ticket. The cinema isn’t cheap these days. The trailers look pretty good apart from the line where he asks Cho Chang to go to the ball with him. I’m aware that they’ve had to cut bits out to be able to fit the longer books of the second half of the HP series of books into single films, I just hope that they haven’t left in that soppy nonsense at the expense of some quality suspense.
