Lantern Peace Parade

String of glowing lanterns through Platt FieldsIt’s not everyday that you join a parade, of mostly kids and parents, who are led by drummers while carrying homemade lanterns. Fran and I found ourselves fascinated by an all in one tiger suit that the little kid in front of us was wearing tucked into his wellies. Thanks to large gloomy clouds it was dark enough for the candles to have an effect and I impressed that the contraptions weren’t vulnerable to the breeze and drizzle. As we trundled through one park, across the main strip and into Platt Park there was a buzz of excitement as the skies got darker, the police multiplied and to my surprise another march merged into ours that had come from the other direction.

Small girl surrounded by lanternsThe cultish march of the lanterns culminated in an even more cultish bonfire ritual. Well not really, but it an onlooker would be at blame to think that. The families were encouraged to write down things that they want to be rid of, be it areas of unforgiveness or fear etc, and hand them in to be prayed over by the and burnt in the fire.

No Fixed Abode

Maybe I could have a mini blog; a blog within a blog that focuses on my extended adventure of having, as this post is titled, no fixed abode.

So on behalf of the Northenden Crew, thank you to all those people who are letting us crash at their pads while we sort our lives out. And personally a big thanks to all those generous drivers who have been helping me move my stuff.

Vector Geek

Today I have been geeking-out on vector graphics. That means that I’ve spent a large part of the last 12hours staring at the laptop and following lame tutorials for Adobe Illustrator. It was day one of self-tuition, crawling the web looking for designers who host free tutorials on their sites, most of which are glorified weblogs (I have a long way to go). In particular I was looking for basics, being a complete Illustrator novice, and I ended up tracing lines and curves with the pen tool. Rock and roll! It just concluded with me making Fran a lovely pink shamrock in honour of the Irish rugby victory today and of the St. Patrick Day parade in Belfast next week, where there has been moves by the council to only allow the parade under certain criteria, such as banning nationalist flags and, would you adam-and-eve-it, the colour green.

The word ‘vector’ reminds me of being in primary school and Continue reading ‘Vector Geek’
